To the Members of Fayetteville City Council:

I am opposed to the City of Fayetteville's attempt to break state law, and request the members of the City Council oppose adopting the amendments that violate HB 142 by adding "gender identity" and “sexual orientation" to its non-discrimination policies at its next city council meeting.

Don't break the law!

  • The proposed amendment incriminates the City Council by openly violating state law.
  • It is a direct violation of HB 142, which is now state law G.S. 143-760, which states "No local government in this State may enact or amend an ordinance regulating private employment practices or regulating public accommodations."
  • It would create a legal liability requiring tax dollars to be used to defend the council's action.
  • Why would the city want to establish an ordinance that would break the law? Why would they want to open up the city for lawsuits and litigation, and therefore waste precious taxpayer money?

Don't do it Fayetteville! Don't break the law. Don't attempt to resurrect Charlotte's politicization of our privacy rights. Don't ignore the dialogue and compromise our state has had these past two years!

Therefore, I kindly request you don't pass the proposed ordinance amendment.
