Welcome to the Friday Five! Every Friday we share our top five articles, stories, and quotes for you to read and share with your friends and church families. Do you enjoy and benefit from NC Values' Friday Five? Would you consider making a $5 donation?
1. The Big Changes the Trumps Are Making at the White House to Celebrate Christmas
"There’ve been a lot of wise men in the White House. But this Christmas, there are three more in the East Room, where the Trumps are highlighting a Nativity scene.
That’s just one of the ways the first family is separating itself from the Obamas, who came dangerously close to ditching the 50-year-old display in 2009. There wasn’t room for Jesus at the inn—and for eight years, there wasn’t much room for him at 1600 Pennsylvania either.
The Obamas famously wanted a “nonreligious Christmas” (which makes about as much sense as a vegetarian barbecue). But they were outed by their social secretary, Desiree Rogers, in an eye-opening profile piece for The New York Times."
2. Thank You for your help this past #GivingTuesday, Here is what we do with those funds!
This past Tuesday was #GivingTuesday and we are so thankful for all of the support you have given us. It is through that support that we are able to defend our values and faith on multiple fronts, including the Supreme Court!
This coming Tuesday the Masterpiece Cakeshop case will be before the Supreme Court and our Amicus Brief will be there (search for North Carolina Values or scroll down to September 6th), defending your values and your faith will be there before the Supreme Court. Our voice will be heard because of your financial support.
We currently have only reached 36% of our end of year goal for fundraising. Please pray and consider donating to us this giving season.
3. Christian teacher suspended for 'misgendering' female students
"A teacher has been suspended and may lose his job because he accidentally called a girl a “girl.”
Joshua Sutcliffe taught math to junior and senior high students at Stonewall schools, which are committed “to tackling homophobia, biphobia and transphobia.” His pupils outperformed every other class in the subject.
A Christian, Sutcliffe respected the school’s pro-transgender policy by referring to all students by their chosen name. He avoided using “Xe,” “Xir,” “They,” or any gender-specific pronouns."
4. Church of Sweden to stop clergy calling God 'he' or 'the Lord' in bid to crack down on gendered language
"The Church of Sweden is encouraging its clergy to use the gender-neutral term "God" instead of referring to the deity as "he" or "the Lord".
The decision was made on Thursday, wrapping up an eight-day meeting of the church's 251-member decision-making body. The decision will take effect on May 20 during Pentecost.
It is the latest move by the national Evangelical Lutheran church to modernise its 31-year-old handbook setting out how services should be conducted."
5. FORBES: North Carolina Heads The Best States For Business 2017 in Spite of Alleged Negative effects of HB2
"North Carolina has built one of the country’s strongest business climates over the past two decades, fueled by low business costs, incentives and a young, educated workforce, many of whom have been trained at the strong universities in the state and Research Triangle Park. Migration rates into the state are among the highest in the U.S. annually. The Tar Heel State is the only one to rank among the top five on FORBES’ Best States for Business for 12 straight years, but it never reached the top rung until now."
WEEKLY PRAYER: JUDGES
LORD, you are the Judge of the nations. You are Creator of the Heavens and the Earth. You are sovereign over all.
LORD, may we find assurance and comfort in the reality that you are the LORD God. In spite of the political events that are unfolding in our country and around the world, we remind ourselves that you are in control. That the Church is within the protection of your providence. That Jesus is our Prince of Peace, and that one day every knee shall bow and declare His Lordship.
LORD, we also bring these specific prayer requests to you, and pray that your Spirit may empower our petitions: Be with our Supreme Court as they listen to Jack Phillips case and have them see that he is an honest man defending his faith in you Lord. Be with your people as they deal with major issues like gay marriage and transgenderism. Be with President Trump and his cabinet. Be with our nation's Supreme Court and Legislature so they can make moral and ethical decision that are in line with Your natural law.
“Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God." (Romans 13:1)
"For kingship belongs to the Lord, and he rules over the nations." (Psalms 22:28)
