Welcome to the Friday Five! Every Friday we share our top five articles, stories, and quotes for you to read and share with your friends and church families. Do you enjoy and benefit from NC Values' Friday Five? Would you consider making a $5 donation?
1. Thank you!
You are all amazing. During the final week of December, we had a huge outpouring of financial donations from supporters. We surpassed one of our matching grants, and it's all thanks to you.
We often ask you for financial assistance, or to contact representatives, and we just want you to know that we're incredibly grateful when you do. Your support and activity IS the NC Values coalition.
From the NC Values team, THANK YOU! May this year be one where we advance the causes of life, family, and religious liberty.
2. The Good: Trump's judicial appointments have been stellar
"Donald Trump deserves thunderous acclaim from conservatives for his outstanding record of judicial appointments during his first year as president. But his conspicuous successes should not obscure the many obstacles on the long path to genuine transformation of the federal judiciary. Those obstacles have seriously impeded judicial confirmations and threaten to continue to do so. But if they are cleared or eluded, and if Republicans retain control of the Senate after the 2018 elections, President Trump will be positioned to make a huge enduring impact on the courts during his first term."
3. The Bad: Trump and the GOP have yet to defund Planned Parenthood
"Two months before his upset victory over Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election, Donald Trump made an unambiguous commitment that helped rally pro-life Americans to his cause. He promised to defund Planned Parenthood. Now, almost a year into his presidency — during which time the Republican Party has controlled both houses of Congress — he has not delivered on that promise."
4. The Ugly: Christian Couple who lost bakery after heavy fine for not making lesbian wedding cake lose their appeal
"The Kleins refused to provide a wedding cake to lesbian couple Laurel and Rachel Bowman-Cryer back in 2013, which led to a complaint being filed against the bakers with Oregon's Bureau of Labor and Industries.
BOLI ruled in July 2015 that the bakers must pay damages totaling $135,000, which led to Sweet Cakes by Melissa shutting down."
5. The Beautiful: Kentucky may be the first state without an abortion clinic
"EMW Women’s Surgical Center in Louisville, Kentucky, is the last remaining abortion facility in the state. Its sister center in Lexington closed down in 2017 because of unacceptable health conditions at the facility. Live Action News’ Carole Novielli noted in July, “A report written by the Lexington Herald in June of 2016 indicates that when inspectors visited on the Lexington facility on February 17 that year, ‘they reported that employees told them the clinic only performed abortions’ and they found ‘dirty conditions and expired medicine.’ News reports also indicate that state inspectors found unsanitary conditions."
WEEKLY PRAYER: 2018
LORD, we recognize that you are Sovereign over all creation. We recognize you made man from the dust, and in your mercy crowned creation with man and woman made in your image. What a wonder it is that you would bestow upon us this blessing and responsibility!
We pray LORD that we would not take this for granted. We pray that both this great responsibility, and this great dignity, may motivate us to love you more, love our neighbor more, and love ourselves more.
We pray that such a great dignity--to be made in your image--may sober our minds and hands. LORD, let us work and love towards respecting and protecting the dignity of your human creation. Be with us as we champion this dignity in public by calling for the protection of human life in the womb; a life that you tell us you knit and know. Be with the efforts of the pro-life movement in abolishing the inhuman savagery of terminating human life in the womb. Be with our families, churches, and ministries as they work through pregnancy centers or adoption and fostering to care for the orphans and needy. Be with us in loving mothers and caring for widows.
LORD, we also bring these specific prayer requests to you, and pray that your Spirit may empower and protect our labor: Be with the leaders of Congress, with President Trump, and with Vice-President Pence, and remind them of their pro-life promises to defund the evil that is Planned Parenthood. Be with the Kleins in their trials and tribulations, and may you call members of the brethren to their financial and emotional aid. Be with the state of Kentucky, and their pursuit of life and liberty. And be with those newly appointed justices, that they may honor "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."
“You have been my guide since I was first formed . . . from my mother’s womb you are my God” (Psalm 22:10-11).
