National School Choice Week 2020

Dear Leonard,

Every January, National #SchoolChoice Week shines a spotlight on effective education options for children.

During NSCW, schools, homeschool groups, organizations and individuals plan tens of thousands of independent events. These celebratory events raise public awareness of the different K-12 education options available to children and families while also spotlighting the benefits of school choice.

NSCW recognizes all K-12 options, including traditional public schools, public charter schools, public magnet schools, private schools, online academies, and homeschooling.

Started in 2011, NSCW is now the world’s largest annual celebration of opportunity in education. Over the past nine years, more than 131,000 NSCW events have been planned across the country and around the world.

This year, North Carolina celebrated National #SchoolChoice Week with a record-breaking 2,313 events and activities across the state (almost 1,000 more than last year). There are a variety of school choice options available for many of the 2.3 million children living in North Carolina. Families in North Carolina can choose from traditional public schools, public charter schools, public magnet schools, private schools, online academies, and homeschooling.

Our state even has a Children with Disabilities Grant (CWD), an Education Savings Account (ESA), and an Opportunity Scholarship Program (OSP). The OSP provides income-based tuition assistance of up to $4,200 per year for awarded students who enroll in a participating nonpublic school (new student application opens up January 31st, and closes March 1st). The Special Needs ESA can help families pay for education with up to $9,000 a year in assistance, and the CWD is worth up to $8,000 to help pay for non-public school tuition or homeschooling (enrollment for both are from January 31st to March 15th).
