North Carolina sued again over transgender rights

On March 11, a lawsuit was filed in Federal District Court by half a dozen state workers who are transgender or who have transgender children. They are all members of the State Health Plan and seek changes to the plan to cover costs related to gender transitioning—surgeries, hormone treatments, and plastic surgeries, that enable a person with gender dysphoria to change their physical appearance to be different from their physical sex.

North Carolina Taxpayers should not be forced to pay for transgender surgeries and hormone treatments through the State Health Plan.

These are elective procedures which are not medically necessary, because research shows them to be ineffective. The most thorough follow-up of sex-reassigned people—extending over 30 years and conducted in Sweden, where the European culture is much more liberal and supportive of these beliefs —documented a lifelong mental unrest facing transgender persons. 10 to 15 years after surgical reassignment, the study found the suicide rate of those who had undergone sex-reassignment surgery rose to 20 times that of comparable peers. The reality is that because sex change is physically impossible, it frequently does not provide the long-term wholeness and happiness that people seek.

The Obama administration came to similar conclusions. In 2016, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services revisited the question of whether sex reassignment surgery would have to be covered by Medicare plans. HSH wrote, "Based on a thorough review of the clinical evidence available at this time, there is not enough evidence to determine whether gender reassignment surgery improves health outcomes for Medicare beneficiaries with gender dysphoria."

The average gender reassignment surgery costs anywhere from $12,500 up to $50,000. Transgender surgeries and hormone treatments should be paid for by the individuals who desire them, not the taxpayers. Persons struggling with gender dysphoria deserve dignity and our respect, however, the state employees who have sued the State of North Carolina to advance an agenda should be relieved of their jobs.

North Carolina is right to refuse funding transgender surgeries and elective procedures with taxpayer dollars. If you agree, would you consider making a donation today towards our Coalition's work defending your values in the public square?
